Postdoctoral Researcher – Potash Brine and Phosphogypsum Valorization

About the role

GSMI is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a 12-month multidisciplinary project on the sustainable valorization of potash brine and phosphogypsum, with a focus on bioleaching technologies. The project follows a circular economy approach, recovering sulfur, magnesium, potassium and other valuable elements from industrial residues produced by sedimentary potash processing. The researcher will study each material separately and then the combined treatment of both.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out a comprehensive literature review on potash brine management, phosphogypsum valorization and related physicochemical and biological routes.
• Perform chemical, mineralogical and physicochemical characterization of potash brines and phosphogypsum.
• Design and run laboratory-scale experiments investigating separate valorization pathways for brines and phosphogypsum.
• Develop and evaluate integrated treatment strategies combining both materials, focusing on synergistic and symbiotic effects.
• Study process parameters affecting the recovery of sulfur, magnesium, potassium and other elements.
• Analyze and synthesize results to support process optimization and assess the environmental and sustainability performance of the processes.
• Prepare scientific publications, technical reports and presentations.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or a related discipline.
• Proven experience in mineral characterization, liquid analysis and process development.
• Strong background in solution chemistry and bioprocessing.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong scientific writing and communication in English.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
