Assistant Professor in Geomechanics

About the role

The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Geomechanics for a full-time, permanent position. The successful candidate will focus on the design of underground and open-pit mining operations and on geomechanics.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research and development in geomechanics, focusing on rock mechanics, slope stability and ground control.
• Develop and implement numerical models to predict and analyse the mechanical behaviour of rock masses in mining environments.
• Explore innovative ground control techniques to improve safety and efficiency in mining.
• Study rock mass behaviour under extreme conditions such as high stress, deep mining and weak rock formations.
• Carry out experimental research, including field investigations at real mining sites, and design laboratory and field experiments.
• Integrate ESG considerations into geotechnical risk management and sustainable mining.
• Recruit and supervise graduate students and research assistants, and build funded research projects.
• Secure research funding through grants and industry partnerships, publish in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
• Teach courses on geomechanics and rock stability.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in mineral engineering, geological engineering or a closely related field.
• Proven track record of securing research funding.
• Experience supervising graduate students and leading research teams.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• An engineering degree in mining engineering is a plus.
