About the role
ICARDA is seeking a senior scientist to lead Strategic Research Priority 3 (SRP3) – Resilient Livestock, Rangelands and Agrosilvopastoral Systems. The role will shape the scientific and strategic direction of a global portfolio, linking livestock and rangeland research with climate adaptation, markets, policy and measurable impact for pastoralists and farmers.
Key responsibilities
- Define and implement the scientific and strategic agenda for SRP3, ensuring alignment with ICARDA’s 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy.
- Manage the portfolio’s scientific quality, budgets, staff, monitoring and learning, and adjust course based on evidence.
- Integrate livestock and rangeland research with crops, water, soils, biodiversity, markets and livelihoods to develop system‑level solutions.
- Identify, adapt and deploy cutting‑edge advances (genomics, digital phenotyping, precision livestock tools, remote sensing, AI, climate modelling) from leading partners.
- Represent ICARDA internationally, influencing global research and policy agendas and building strategic alliances with FAO, IFAD, UNEP, development banks, private sector and producer organizations.
- Mobilise multi‑million‑dollar funding from bilateral, multilateral, philanthropic and private sources to ensure a financially sustainable portfolio.
Required profile
- PhD in livestock‑rangeland systems, rangeland ecology, animal genetics, agroecology or related field.
- 12–15 years of international research‑for‑development experience, including senior leadership of multidisciplinary teams and large portfolios.
- Internationally recognised scientific record with influence on research programmes, policy or practice.
- Proven ability to secure and manage multi‑million‑dollar research investments.
- Demonstrated success leading multicultural, geographically distributed teams and mentoring emerging leaders.
- Experience in low‑ and middle‑income countries with smallholder, pastoral or agropastoral systems.
- Evidence of research adoption, institutional change or policy impact at scale.
- Strong quantitative or systems‑analysis skills and excellent written and spoken English; French or Arabic desirable.
- Experience in CGIAR or comparable international research organization is a plus.
