Cover Supervisor – Classroom Support

About the role

The Cover Supervisor ensures continuity of learning when teachers are absent by supervising lessons, delivering pre‑planned work and maintaining a safe, calm classroom environment. This role does not require lesson planning but focuses on supporting students and staff to keep the day running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise classes during teacher absences, ensuring students complete assigned work.
• Manage behaviour in line with school policies and maintain a positive learning atmosphere.
• Record attendance and behaviour incidents accurately and refer serious issues to senior staff.
• Provide one‑to‑one or small‑group support to encourage engagement and independence.
• Prepare materials, organise resources for cover lessons and keep accurate cover records.
• Follow safeguarding and child protection procedures and act as a form tutor when needed.
• Attend briefings, training and staff meetings, collaborating with colleagues to ensure learning continuity.
• Support school events, enrichment activities and promote the school’s values.

• Strong interpersonal skills with confidence in managing groups of young people.
• Ability to remain calm, professional and in control in a classroom setting.
• Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
• Willingness to follow instructions, routines and school policies consistently.
