Data Governance Engineer – Microsoft 365

About the role

The Data Governance Engineer will design, implement and operationalise data‑governance controls across Microsoft 365 services such as SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Teams and Exchange. The role focuses on data quality, compliance, lifecycle management, classification and protection using Microsoft Purview and native M365 capabilities.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deploy enterprise‑wide data‑governance models for M365, defining classification, retention and lifecycle policies.
• Configure and manage Microsoft Purview components: sensitivity labels, retention labels, DLP policies, records management and information barriers.
• Implement controls for duplicate‑file detection, content sprawl reduction, versioning, archival and data‑ownership stewardship.
• Develop Power Automate workflows and PowerShell/Graph API scripts for bulk policy enforcement, remediation and exception handling.
• Build governance dashboards in Power BI, monitor compliance via Purview portal, audit logs and define KPIs such as % labeled content and duplicate‑file reduction rate.
• Collaborate with security, compliance, M365 administration and business data owners, define RACI matrices and participate in governance councils.

Required profile

• 5‑10 years of experience in data governance, compliance or related IT roles.
• Strong understanding of regulatory standards (GDPR, HIPAA, ISO 27001) and ability to translate them into M365 controls.
• Proven ability to work cross‑functionally with security, compliance and business teams.
