HP Substrate Developer

About the role

The HP Substrate Developer works within the New Categories R&D Consumable Discovery Group, reporting to a Senior HP Substrate Developer. The role focuses on delivering substrate‑focused innovation for Heated Products (HP) and cross‑category pipelines, supporting Horizon 2 and 3 initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Execute or lead substrate innovation work‑packages and technology blocks, ensuring scope, quality and timeline delivery.
• Define and implement technical plans for assigned initiatives, coordinating activities, managing interfaces and risks.
• Conduct substrate formulation trials, develop and optimise formulations in line with technical direction.
• Generate high‑quality experimental data, perform analysis, and document results within BAT’s PLM and 4D innovation frameworks.
• Collaborate with internal teams (marketing, procurement, legal, safety, etc.) and external partners (suppliers, labs, scouting agencies).

Required profile

• Strong chemistry‑led thinking with solid material‑science fundamentals.
• Experience in processing and optimisation of consumable substrates for heated products.
• Ability to work under governance structures, manage moderate‑complexity projects, and ensure compliance with ESG, EHS and cost targets.
• Effective communication with cross‑functional and external stakeholders.
