About the role
ICARDA is seeking a senior scientist to lead Strategic Research Priority 3 – Resilient Livestock, Rangelands and Agrosilvopastoral Systems. The role will shape the centre’s 2030 research agenda, integrate multidisciplinary science with climate adaptation, markets and policy, and deliver measurable impact for pastoralists and farmers in dryland areas.
Key responsibilities
- Define and implement the scientific and strategic direction of SRP3, ensuring alignment with ICARDA’s 2030 Strategy and delivering clear development, environmental and policy outcomes.
- Manage the portfolio’s scientific quality, budget, staff, monitoring and learning, and adjust course based on emerging evidence.
- Build integrated research linking livestock, rangelands, crops, water, soils, biodiversity, markets and livelihoods across ICARDA’s research priorities.
- Identify, adapt and deploy advances such as genomics, digital phenotyping, precision livestock tools, remote sensing, AI and climate modelling into practical solutions for smallholder and pastoral systems.
- Represent ICARDA internationally, shaping global research and policy agendas and forging strategic alliances with FAO, IFAD, UNEP, development banks, private sector and producer organisations.
- Design multi‑country initiatives and mobilise funding from bilateral, multilateral, philanthropic and climate‑finance sources to build a financially sustainable portfolio.
- Lead, mentor and expand a geographically distributed multidisciplinary team, recruiting top talent and fostering career development.
Required profile
- PhD in livestock‑rangeland systems, rangeland ecology, animal genetics, agroecology or a related field.
- 12‑15 years of international research‑for‑development experience with senior responsibility for multidisciplinary programmes and large portfolios.
- Internationally recognised scientific record influencing research programmes, policy or practice.
- Proven track record of securing and managing multi‑million‑dollar research investments and partnerships.
- Demonstrated success leading multicultural, geographically dispersed scientific teams.
- Experience working in low‑ and middle‑income countries with smallholder, pastoral or agropastoral systems.
- Evidence of research adoption, institutional change or policy impact at scale.
- Strong quantitative or systems‑analysis expertise and excellent written and spoken English.
