Postdoctoral Researcher in Bio-Inspired Drone Design and Testing

About the role

This postdoctoral research position focuses on the design, prototyping and testing of bio-inspired drones, inspired by the aerodynamics and adaptability of natural flyers such as birds and bats. The researcher contributes to the mechanical design, composite fabrication and experimental validation of UAV structures, integrating morphing wings and additive manufacturing. The main goal is to support the development and validation of morphing drone prototypes through structural optimisation, lightweight design and experimental testing.

Key responsibilities

• Take part in CAD/CAE modelling and structural optimisation of UAV frames.
• Contribute to fabrication using composite layup and polymer additive manufacturing.
• Prepare and run aerodynamic, vibration and endurance test campaigns.
• Assist in assembling and calibrating morphing-wing UAV prototypes.
• Document results, analyse data and contribute to reports and publications.

Required profile

• Engineering degree (Bac+5) or equivalent in Aerospace, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
• Background in CAD/CAE, structural design or composite materials.
• Practical experience in additive manufacturing or mechanical testing is an advantage.
• Autonomous, organised and motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• CAD/CAE tools such as ABAQUS, SolidWorks, ANSYS or COMSOL for topology optimisation and aerodynamic modelling.
• Composite layup and 3D printing (FDM/SLA).

Expected outcomes: a TRL 5 UAV prototype, three Q1 publications and one patent contribution, and a workflow for morphing UAV design established at UM6P. Applications require a CV, a cover letter and one recommendation letter.
